Street Food
If there's anything that comes close to the food markets as my favorite aspect of traveling abroad, it is the street food, hands down. I just adore exploring the food options made right there on the street over charcoal fires, or in small stalls with slightly larger kitchen set-ups. The street food is always cheap, delicious and authentic. In Vietnam, the best street food scene by far was found in Hanoi - wow. Anything and everything you could ever want, prepared hot and fresh and available for pennies - donuts, potato chips, banh mi, the ever-present pho, bao, spring rolls, even dog meat (no, I didn't try that particular delicacy).
